Issue 12—our second annual Photography Issue—is a tribute to the visual medium, the beauty of the outdoors, and the photographers who go out of their way to document it for us. Like last year, this unique edition still has all the things you love about Trails: great adventure stories, trail maps, backpacking recipes, skills, and gear. But it's far more visual than our typical issues. We worked with some of the most talented photographers and storytellers in the outdoor space to curate a jaw-droppingly gorgeous magazine with stories from across the continent and world. As always, it's printed on hefty 80-pound paper with fewer ads than any other magazine. Stories in this issue include:
- A cover shot from Kersten Vasey showing off the scale of the Great Sand Dunes,
- Reporting about who the responsibility for maintaining our public lands falls to in the wake of budget cuts and layoffs at the federal level,
- The story of a trip to the Selkirks and how it was improved by working with the land, rather than against it,
- A photographer profile of Tommy Corey, the creator behind Hiker Trash Vogue and more,
- The story of a backpacking trip along the U.S.-Mexico border,
- An examination of domesticated sheep in wilderness areas and how that impacts our perception of wilderness,
- The profile of an Adirondack slide climber, a story about what could become the longest bike route anywhere, and an opinion about whether or not wilderness truly exists anymore,
- The story of a trip following the Deming Glacier from source to sea, a unique Sierra outhouse, and a quiet backcountry refuge in the Idaho mountains,
- Plus all the recipes, maps, Vantage Points, and more that you expect from Trails.
Want to guarantee you get a copy of Issue 13 for even more stories like that? The only way to do it is to subscribe.
A note for international readers: Back issues are shipped from our headquarters in Washington, so international shipping costs apply if we send them out of the US. Readers in Canada should consider a subscription which includes free shipping—Those copies ship directly from the printer in Winnipeg and don't need to cross the border.
