Does anyone else remember the days when Internet forums and mailing lists were hubs of the backpacking and adventure community? Back then, the thing to do after returning from a hike, was hop on and share your trip report—a detailed writeup of your journey with beta for those following behind you, photos, and some good storytelling.

Well, we're not sure forums are making a big comeback, but we do want to give you a place to share your trip reports. Head here the next time you come back from a good trip and tell us about it. We'll feature the best stories here in our weekly newsletter and create a space for discussion, questions, and community.

The best Field Notes will feature the following:

  • Include a fair amount of detail without writing a trip report thats too long. Shoot for somewhere between 200 and 300 words.
  • Be sure too tell us about where you went and the specific route you took, the length of your trip (both in days and miles), and what happened on your trip. Were you successful? Were there any difficulties? How was the weather? Was it easier or harder than you expected? Would you go back? All of those would be interesting directions to take.
  • Include at least one good, high-quality photo from your trip, ideally showing the landscape you visited.
